Discussion:
Need a replacement for BNR, I fear

I've been having more and more trouble with BNR2 for Linux over the past year
or so. The final straw seems to have been my move to KDE4.2. Since then I've
been getting random crashes out of BNR when I open a group. By "random", I
mean "roughly 50% of the time". Needless to say, this makes using the program
rather nervewracking.

I'm currently experimenting with running the Windows version via wine, but at
best, that's an awkward workaround.

So I'm looking for recommendations from anyone who cares to offer one. My
minimum requirements are:

1) Linux-native
2) Multi-server selection (gathers headers from multiple servers and presents
a merged view as BNR does) and download.
3) Allows grouping related newsgroups into a single view (as BNR does via
folders).

Note that I do *not* require that it necessarily handle multiple threads for
downloading -- that's a "nice but not necessary", as I typically queue a bunch
of files before I leave for work, and leave them downloading when I go.

Your (collective) thoughts?

:) I really have a love hate relationship with BNR2.... but to be perfectly frank....bnr2 is still the best prog I keep coming back tooooo....have never used linux but it should have a dual boot where u use an old version to download what you want.

Currently using w2k but will be stepping up to w7 in the near future..however w2k is great and will be keeping bnr2 on w2k. :) bnr3 is not an option for me!!!

Are you not able to do the same dual boot in linux???

Are you not able to do the same dual boot in linux???
If I have to reboot my computer twice every day (once to go to the old OS,
once to return to the new one), I'm going to throw the computer out and go
back to pencil and paper for all my data retention needs. <laughter>

Seriously. The point here is to make life _easier_.

For what it's worth for anybody who finds themselves in the same situation,
BNR2 seems pretty solid and stable under wine* with a couple of exceptions:
(1) you can't get into the Options dialog. So I did some manual editing of
the ini file based on the one from my BNR2 Linux install.
(2) Opening groups is very slow. I clocked one group with less than 100K
articles at 45 seconds to open. Once the group is open, though, it works
speedily enough.
As I said originally, though, wine is essentially a workaround with little
long-term value. Sooner or later, BNR2 is going to age beyond the point of
usefulness -- all it would take would be for something to come along and
replace yEnc or for the NZB spec to get an update -- and then BNR2 would be
pretty much useless even if it still runs.

*wine, for those who don't know, is a program that lets you run Windows
programs on a Linux machine. Strictly speaking, it's not an emulator, but you
can think of it as one.

I dont understand why BNR3 is not an option if you can run 2 then with a
bit of fine tuning BNR3 is just as fast and far more powerful. I have
posted all of my work-a-rounds that make it go just as fast as 2 and never
crash. But I have seen that quite a few others have re posted some of my
.bat files with parts missing and things like the sync off.

The best way I have found is to make the sqLite page file the right size
for YOUR computer seems missed by many, use contig to de-frag the msglst
before you start, all done in the bat files I have posted.

I have also posted the reason why BNR2 can crash when opening a group,
dont do so when getting new headers and so on.

But if BNR was working fine before you changed to KDE 4.2 then that is
where the problem would be, I have heard many say its none too stable, I
have never liked (or used) the KDE shell anyway. But as BNR works so well
with Win2000 I see no reason to change the computer it runs on, my older
Athlon XP2600, its still the most powerful windows OS that runs for months
at a time on a 5 year old install that does take almost 50 seconds to
reboot, but defrags the C:// and D:// and the registry in that time as
well. Cant wait for the new look Vista or W7 to offer nothing new.
