Discussion:
(expired) articles problem 0.14.2 version

For the last several weeks, I have been seeing LOTS of rows listed
with the notation/file name of (expired). It is/was very annoying
and got in the way of looking at the legitimate files.

My tools/settings are
Auto expire articles....6 days
Delete expired articles every 1 day

I have all threads expanded (I don't use the + option)

By accident I discovered this:
If I click on a row (file) and try to mark the expired row as READ
by typing the letter R on the row, then ALL EXPIRED rows disappear!

That's a great undocumented/unintended workaround.

Anyone else noticed this bug?

I'm pretty sure R is for marking something as read so it disappears
from view with the New filter.

Maybe we need another flag to disabled Expired articles in the
filter option flags??

Unfortunately, yes with the same settings as yours :(
Moreover, if an article has expired on one server, it is marked as
such even though another server may still carry it.

However, the articles you see as "expired" aren't actually.
If you use another newsreader, you'll see them normally on the server.
It's possible that there is a problem with the delete expired articles
setting. Try setting it to "-1", i.e. disable it and see if the
problem continues.

The "R" trick has been around for quite some time, maybe since BNR1.

In fact, marking as read ANY article (not just one expired) will make all
expired go away. Unfortunately, if you close the group and open it again,
the expired will be back there.

Other things that refresh the display, like applying view filters, will also only
hide them temporarily (if affected by the filter). Once you deactivate the
filter, the expired will come back.

Unlike others have reported, I don't see lots of them, but only a few, and
most of the times (but not always) they are old articles, which seem to be
truly expired. My settings: AutoExpire=28 , DeleteExpired=0

Regards.
